Renovate, repair & Paint (RRP)
Partnership Effort for the Advancement of Children's Health (PEACHDurham) offers EPA and North Carolina-accredited Lead Renovator (RRP) Initial and Refresher courses. Both are crucial for compliance with the EPA's Renovation, Repair, and Painting (RRP) rule.
Lead Renovator (RRP) Initial Certification Class
(Typically 8 hours):
Description: This comprehensive class is designed for individuals and firms who perform renovation, repair, or painting work in pre-1978 housing or child-occupied facilities. The EPA's RRP rule mandates that such work be conducted using lead-safe practices to prevent lead contamination. Participants will learn how to comply with federal regulations and protect occupants from lead hazards.
What Participants Can Expect to Learn/Experience:

§ Regulations: A thorough understanding of the EPA's RRP rule, including penalties for non-compliance.
§ Health Effects of Lead: Information on how lead affects children and adults, emphasizing the importance of prevention.
§ Lead-Based Paint Identification: How to identify painted surfaces that may contain lead.
§ Before Beginning Work: Proper client notification, record-keeping requirements, and pre-renovation activities.
§ Containment and Dust Control: Hands-on training in setting up containment areas, using dust reduction methods, and safe work practices to minimize lead dust.
§ Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Proper selection and use of PPE.
§ Cleaning and Verification: Techniques for thorough cleaning and verifying the effectiveness of lead-safe practices.
§ Recordkeeping: Essential documentation required for compliance.
§ Training Non-Certified Workers: How to properly inform and direct non-certified workers on job sites.
§ Certification Exam: Successful completion of a 25-question exam is required to receive certification.
Lead Renovator (RRP) REFRESHER Class
(Typically 4 hours)
Description: This class is for individuals who have previously completed the 8-hour RRP Initial Certification course and need to renew their certification. Certification typically needs to be renewed every five years (though some EPA-authorized states may require renewal every 3 or 4 years).
