Youth Education & HOPE Initiative and the Healthy Homes Outreach Program

The Healthy Homes Outreach Program and Education Preparedness Project targets middle school youth and follows them through high school to expose them to career opportunities in public health education. The program is a partnership with NC Central University Department of Public Health Education and helps students develop leadership skills, identify community service opportunities, and better position themselves for college enrollment and success.

PEACH supports young people in becoming informed, empowered leaders in public health through two closely aligned, yet distinct programs: the Healthy Homes Outreach Program and Education Preparedness Project, and the Youth Education & HOPE Initiative (Helping Our Pupils Excel).

The Healthy Homes Outreach Program and Education Preparedness Project begins at the middle school level and follows students through high school, introducing them to concepts in environmental science, public health education, and healthy housing. Through a partnership with North Carolina Central University (NCCU) Department of Public Health Education, students explore real-world applications of health advocacy, participate in leadership development, and engage in community service opportunities that build their college and career readiness.

The Youth Education & HOPE Initiative further supports this pipeline by offering targeted workshops, mentoring, and culturally responsive health education curricula that reflect the lived experiences of youth in historically under-resourced neighborhoods. HOPE equips students with tools to advocate for their own health, contribute to safer home environments, and envision futures in science, health care, and environmental justice careers.

Together, these initiatives provide a long-term support system for Durham’s youth, bridging education, empowerment, and equity in the service of a healthier tomorrow.
